Supporting Homeless Vets

Design Matters. In the world of home staging, we need to always be up to date with what’s trending in design. We have to know what people want and, more importantly, why they want it. Staging is so much more than schlepping couches up elevators in sub zero temperatures or throwing a piece of artwork on a wall. Design, when done well, can make you feel something. On the contrary, design, when done poorly, also makes you feel something, but that’s a discussion for another day.

When we were asked to stage an apartment and community room for a brand new building in Milwaukee called Victory Manor, it served as an important reminder of why we do what we do, and why we do it so well. This project was unique because the building was built to be housing for homeless Veterans or Veterans with physical and/or mental illness. Everything that went into the planning and construction of this building was thoughtful: the colors were calm, the hallways were wide, the building was secure.

As we packed for the job, we purposefully chose soothing blues and greens. We packed cozy pillows and blankets, green plants, colorful books and cheerful décor. Everything was chosen because it would give the feeling of a calm home to those who probably hadn’t had this kind of living environment in a while.

As we waited on the photographer to shoot the rooms, we had some time to reflect on design and why it matters in our world. Sure, design can be fun. But it’s important because it allows us humans to bring beauty into the world. When a space is designed correctly, it can enhance life, calm the spirit, nourish the soul. A space that meets the needs of those using it brings about productivity. A well-designed space can promote community. Through staging, we can showcase how best to utilize your space, how to create a home suited for your family, your work life, and your community. Home staging is one way we bring beauty into the world.
